Blogger Interview // Taylor Balding

Today I'm excited to bring to you a little interview I conducted with blogger Taylor Balding of Restless Youth. She is a 19-year old style blogger and college student whose style can best be described as bold and classic. The photos on her blog range from ethereal to grunge-y to modern and I was very enthusiastic to ask her a few questions.

Courtney: Hi again, I’m so glad that you agreed to do this little interview! First Question:
Why did you create your blog?

Taylor: Around my Junior or Senior year of high school I started to really get into fashion blog that featured girls sharing their personal style. It was something I spent a lot of time consumed by, and I think something just clicked that made me think, "Hey, I can do this too!" I'm sure there were more reasons at the time, but I remember I just wanted something that was my own "thing", where I really didn't have rules and could express myself anyway I pleased.

Courtney: What is your definition of a “restless youth?”

Taylor: Originally when I chose restless youth it was describing youth subculture movements, which ranges between the flappers of the 20s to the mods of the 60s to the punks of the 70s and 80s, and so on. Any type of "anti" fashion movement is a huge fashion influence on me. But lately I believe restless youth means so much more than that to me. It's not wanting to blend in and follow societies standards, but to stand out as your own individual with your own voice.

Courtney: Where do you find inspiration?

Taylor: Like I said, past subcultural movements are huge to be. Other than that my inspiration comes from a wide variety of things- from famous fashion icons to movie characters to street style.

Courtney: I love the pictures on your blog. What goes through your mind when you are styling outfits/choosing a shooting location?

Taylor: In terms of styling my outfits, there really isn't much that goes through my mind. It all depends on my mood that day and what I'm currently into. That being said I don't shoot every outfit I wear, so if I feel like my outfit is more trendy or "blog-worthy", and if I have free time, I take pictures. In terms of location I just try to think of what would be a good canvas and what will not only go with my outfit but also make it pop. I usually try to find cool walls or places with good vegetation. I often find that I don't really like "pretty" spots, but prefer more run down and rustic looking areas.

Courtney: What kinds of career do you want to pursue? / Thoughts on the fashion industry?

Taylor: My dream job would be to be a print stylist for either a magazine or a clothing company. I love fashion, and I believe that people choose to focus on the "bad" of the industry rather than the good. The truth is we are all influenced by it to some point (whether or not you want to admit it) and as long as humans are wearing clothes it’s not going anywhere. However I think there is a lot of bad in the industry. Overall it's a pretty cold industry, and often times the portrayal of women is very dangerous and damaging. However I think this is something that can easily be changed as long as we get a few powerful people who would be bold enough to push for this change.

Courtney: Who are your role models?

Taylor: The weird thing for me is I don't really have any "role models". I often have style icons, but that always changes. A year ago the style of Edie Sedgwick was very influential for me, but now not so much. I'm mainly just influenced by people around me and anyone who is not afraid to be themselves.

Courtney: What kinds of music do you like? Do you think that is reflected in your personal style?

Taylor: Oh gosh, all kinds! I mainly listen to a lot of surf rock, punk, and bands that are local to me. I like a lot of folky stuff as well, and mellow bands such as Beach House. I also love old stuff, such as Joy Division and The Velvet Underground.Jazz music also has a special place in my heart. But yes, it has a huge impact on my style! You can often tell what kind of music I've been listening to based off of what I'm wearing. Not only that, but I'm constantly inspired by style I see going to concerts. Places like that are where you can see some of the most innovative styles.

That's it for now! Again, you can find Taylor at her blog, http://restlessy0uth.blogspot.com/, I really suggest that you check it out! Thank you for reading as always <3

Summer Swimwear

Summer is nearly here and I am more excited about swim suits than going to the beach.
I get really annoyed when magazines try to tell you what kind of a bathing suit to wear according to your body type. Especially since I am usually classified as having a "boyish figure" by most sources. Then I remember, I don't have to listen to their advice, and you don't either!

So here's my round-up of cute suits, regardless of what Seventeen Mag or Glamour tells you to wear. I tried to keep in mind diverse budgets- these swim beauties range anywhere from $14 to $88.

Pineapple Princess

They call me the pineapple princess.

Well at least my mom does...

I wish I had a pineapple to pose with for this photo set. I love "tropical" fruit like passion fruit, mango, pineapple, star fruit... but they have become more like a luxury food item to me. Unless I just go and buy a can of sliced pineapples, I don't eat a lot of the fruits I mentioned above with frequency. If you're one of those people who don't care for fruit, you should really try to get your hands on some 'exotic' fruit and see if you like it!
Healthy foods are a part of my growing up, we always had bananas, plums, peaches, and other various fruits & veggies in our home. I remember when I was 3 or 4 I would eat at least one banana per day and now I can't even smell a banana without feeling nauseous!

On another note, I am SO ready for school to end! Especially because it has been in the 100s temperature-wise. Only 20 more days of my sophomore year to go! It sounds so crazy in my head and I believe when people tell me that high school goes by fast...

Juxtaposed Skies

Juxtaposed.
~
Softer than skies,
Sweeter than summer.
Dreamy at dawn,
The clouds have cleared.
The efflorescence of flowers,
their scent filling the air.
An iridescent dew droplet fades.

Besides me being a hot mess right now, I hope all you are doing well!

I was playing around with Picasa 3 again after a stressful day. (I had two big tests today and my first AP Test is next Wednesday, May 14th.) I have also been super angsty and my emotions are like a rollercoaster. The result of my creativity and teen angst are the above photos. I am quite proud of them. In the first two photos you can see me eating an ice cream cone!! It is a mini chocolate cone from Trader Joe's and they are really good. [not a sponsored post]

This is a really artsy post, for I also wrote the poem that is featured above. I forgot how one can express their thoughts and feelings so beautifully through poetry. How do you express your creative side?

Summer Shoe Picks

Summer Shoe Picks by courtneynicole23
(Clockwise starting at top right: 1 2 3 4 )

Slip-on trainers are DEFINITELY a must for this summer as I mentioned in this post, and so are espadrilles. They are easy to slip on with a casual, bohemian outfit.
Heeled sandals are still a staple this season- try them in a neutral color to elongate your legs! As for the espadrilles, stick to basic colors or a pastel hue. Don't shy out on Slip-ons though! Try a crazy daisy print like the ones pictured above or order your own custom pair from this awesome shop!

12 Items, 12 Outfits: Spring Edition

Hello, hope your day has been lovely!

Today I am bringing you a special post about how you can take 12 items to create 12 different outfits!
I have taken much inspiration from Annika at the Pineneedle Collective and also the Delightfully Tacky Blog, for they often post "remixes" showing you how to style clothing in various ways!

Here's how I'm approaching it:
*I selected 12 items of clothing that I will attempt to style to form 12 outfits.
*I am opting to add various accessories besides shoes to help complete the outfit that are not included in the main 12 items (i.e. purses, belts, scarfs, jewelry, etc.)

links to the items or similar items: a . b . c . d . e . f . g . h . i . j . k . l .

Outfit #1
d, e, l ... This is the look that I wore on Easter! It has a cutesy-vintage vibe.

Outfit #2
a, g, k ... This look would be even cuter with some black tights underneath the shorts!

Outfit #3
c, f, l ... This is one of my favorites! Try a collared button-up under a dress for a completely different look!

Outfit #4
b, g, j ... This is a nice look for a cool spring day! I accessorized with a pendant necklace.

Outfit #5
b, c, h, k ... Pair your button-up with a sweater and shorts for a classic, preppy pairing.

Outfit #6
k, i, d ... I styled a dressy-casual outfit here perfect for a shopping trip or a party!

Outfit #7
c, e, l ... I personally love this outfit! Here I just tied the button-up over my dress to change things up.

Outfit #8
c, h, j... Just another preppy look! I tucked my button-up into my stripey shorts.

Outfit #9
b, i, j... I tucked a sweater in this floral skirt and paired it with a long pendant necklace.

Outfit #10
a, j, g... This look doesn't exactly "match," but the pieces work somehow! I added a vintage purse to accessorize. The result is a casual day-to-night look.

Outfit #11
f, j ... A paired this vintage floral scarf with my gray dress for a classy look.

Outfit #12
f, l... I paired a basic belt from Forever 21 with some bracelets and my wedges for an urban-chic outfit.

It's very cool how you can 'remix' your clothes to expand your wardrobe! Being an aspiring stylist, I found this to be good practice!

That's all for now, hope you enjoyed!
